When a Painting Goes Beyond the Frame
This was a slightly different project from the ones we’ve worked on so far. This time, our task was to bring fragments of the work of Polish avant-garde artist Kazimierz “Kachu” Ostrowski (1917–1999) onto silk, creating a scarf and a twilly for the Gdynia City Museum.
Two things immediately stood out in the artist’s work: colour and geometry.
For the scarf, the painting “Fish” (1960–1969) was proposed. Even on such a small surface, we managed to capture two fish. To bring the piece together, we finished the whole piece with a hand-rolled red edge, simple, like the frame of a painting.
The second artwork, “At the Shipyard”, was transformed into a twilly, a long silk ribbon. We used different fragments of the painting on each side, so depending on how the twilly is worn, it can take on many distinct styles.
It was a really interesting experience to see how works created with a canvas in mind can take on a new life as something you can wear every day.
The “Kachu Totalny” exhibition at the Gdynia City Museum is open until the end of February 2027. If you’re in Gdynia, it’s definitely worth a visit; you can discover Ostrowski’s work and, at the same time, see the silk pieces we created together with the Museum.
